Managing wild dogs and foxes

Brindabella and Wee Jasper valleys: cooperative wild dog / fox control plan 2002 - 2005

Active tracking, baiting and trapping programs are conducted on State forests throughout NSW to manage wild dogs and foxes.

Forests NSW is also working closely with other land managers and local landholders to develop effective joint management strategies such as the Brindabella and Wee Jasper valleys cooperative wild dog/fox control plan.

This plan is an innovative approach to wild dog and fox management across all land tenures at the northern extent of the Australian Alps.

The plan was introduced following a successful trial control program in 2001/2002. The trial was developed and implemented by a working group comprising representatives of all private and public land managers within the Brindabella and Wee Jasper valleys.

Backed by strong community support for a cooperative solution Forests NSW, Yass Rural Lands Protection Board and NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service agreed to commit the resources required to effectively implement the plan over a three year period.

The plan was so successful that a second plan was developed in June 2005 that continues the program for a further five years.

The Brindabella and Wee Jasper wild dog and fox working group meets regularly and consults with landholders across the valleys to review and improve the operation of the plan.
