The Malleefowl of Goonoo State Forest

MalleefowlGoonoo State Forest, north-east of Dubbo is the home of the endangered and magnificent malleefowl.  The first recorded sighting of a malleefowl in Goonoo was in 1954. There are currently eight known active mounds in Goonoo of varying ages.

Current Status of the Malleefowl (as of November 2000)

There are eight active breeding mounds in Goonoo State Forest (25 kilometres northeast of Dubbo), two of which were constructed in September 2000. State Forests believes from anecdotal evidence that there are at least 20 birds in Goonoo State Forest.
